Word Camp Cape Town

The Plastic Soldiers team recently attended the Word Camp – Word Press developers conference held at Kirstenbosch in Cape Town. It was a good day at the geek farm for the crew who were there and got the t-shirts, as a varied panel of speakers covered a broad scope of Word Press CMS related presentations.

Our team’s top rated presentations were:

Riaan Knoetze’s talk on Child Theme creation and theme shop marketing

Knoetze explained how he targeted existing theme sellers that had themes with great functionality, but poor design. Through childtheming, he “hijacked” existing theme shops and carved out a niche through improved theme designs. Much in line with a few of the products we have in production at the moment.

Another quality session was Anthony Somerset’s presentation on optimisation of MySQL and PHP config

Anthony  from W3 EDGE, the makers of W3 Total Cache plugin gave an in-depth talk about optimising WordPress CMS driven sites with MySQL and PHP configurations. In his opinion often the database is the bottleneck and he shared valuable insight on MySQL engines MyISAM and InnoDB, recommended tools, configuration variables to target, web servers (Apache vs. Nginx), cleaning up old database data. Speed tip: outsourcing comments by using Disqus – which we have successfully running on many of our sites.

He touched on database replication through HyperDB and went in depth with suggested tune settings for PHP.

RSAWEB’s guy spoke on scaling growing WordPress sites through cloud services, and CDN content delivery network hosting - something we’ll definitely investigate!

As always lots to learn. Thanks to Lightspeed and the event organisers.
